Towards the end of today’s broadcast of “The Five,” the panel of Fox News hosts finally got around to discussing the report that President Donald Trump referred to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as “shithole” countries while questioning protections for immigrants from those areas. And guess what? Jesse Watters didn’t really have a problem with that remark. After making the case that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) “five white guys” quip was racially insensitive earlier in the show, Watters went out of his way to give Trump the benefit of the doubt regarding POTUS’s recent comments. “I think it’s either fake news or if it’s true, this is how the forgotten men and women in America talk at the bar,” he stated. Watters continued, “Is it a little offensive? Of course. But you know what? This doesn’t move the needle at all. This is how Trump is. He doesn’t care. He shoots from the hip. And if he offends some people, fine. There’s so many more offensive things happening the world. ISIS beheading people. There’s crime in the inner-city. There are people getting kicked off welfare.”
It takes an unapologetic racist to refer to predominantly non-Caucasian countries as “shit holes.” It takes someone with no soul or sense of common human decency to defend that sort of virulent racism. Jesse Watters is just that sort of proud horse’s behind.
Having gotten his start as Bill O’Reilly’s attack dog and introducing the term “ambush journalism” into the American lexicon, he’s built a career on being a professional asshole. Respecting no boundaries, and having no sense of kindness, compassion, or decency, Watters will do anything- no matter egregiously offensive- in order to get attention and a “story.” His defense of Donald Trump is in a class with some of the infamous ambush interviews he became infamous for. It’s not “journalism;” it’s pure, unvarnished propaganda.
Juan Williams countered that Watters would be beside himself if the president had said this about “white people,” leading Watters to further expand on his argument.
“He was talking about third world countries,” Watters stated. “You’re bringing in people that have very low skills and low education.”
Later in the discussion, after it was noted that Fox News had confirmed the report, the rest of the panel largely come to the conclusion that while the “shithole” remark wasn’t a good thing for Trump to say, that it was essentially “loose talk” from the president.
Fox News talking heads defending the President despite his offensive behavior and/or speech is neither new nor particularly surprising. Nor is the hypocrisy involved in making the case that Nancy Pelosi was racially insensitive, even as they give the President a free pass for something far worse. Partisanship in the service of someone up to his keister in racism and offensiveness is no crime…as long as he’s one of their own. Indeed, it’s the raison d’ etre of Fox News these days.
Watters’ defense is certainly no surprise; he’s frequently demonstrated a willingness to attack Liberals for the things he’d happily provide a free pass to Conservatives for.
“[T]his is how the forgotten men and women in America talk at the bar?” Really? Now we’re excusing Joe and Ethel Sixpack for being racist assholes? It’s OK; they’re REAL Americans, right? I wonder if Watters had any idea of how offensive that cheap propaganda is?
“This is how Trump is. He doesn’t care. He shoots from the hip. And if he offends some people, fine.” I can’t help but think how explosive the outrage would have been had Barack Obama said something similar. The weeping and gnashing of teeth would’ve have been heard from sea to shining sea…and justifiably so. Why is it any different when Donald Trump does it? Well, he’s not The Black Guy [who used to be] in the White House ©. Hypocrisy much?
“There’s so many more offensive things happening the world. ISIS beheading people. There’s crime in the inner-city.” There’s Jesse Watters being unabashedly hypocritical for defending Donald Trump’s racism while excoriating Nancy Pelosi for something not even close to racism.
Move along, sheeple; no double standard here.
Nice work, America. You broke it…you bought it. And we’re stuck with it.
