LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) — The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a hate symbol found on a campaign sign in Leander. Democratic Congressional candidate Dr. Christine Mann says property owners who requested a large sign at the corner of their lot on Baker Lane called her husband Thursday to let him know someone had put a rope with a hangman’s noose on it the same day the sign was installed…. The family practice physician has no idea who would do such a thing, but has her theories on the motivation. “One is that I am a woman running for a high office in the area, my campaign manager is an African-American woman, so there could be an element there, and the property owners are a lesbian couple,” said Mann. She says the couple was adamant about keeping the sign up, and Dr. Mann is not backing down either. “We are going to move forward and we are going to stand up for what we think is right,” said Dr. Mann.
Greetings from our (not so very) post-racial society. It’s a place where people judge one another not by the color of their skin, their sexuality, and/or their religion, but by the content of their character. Except when they don’t…which seems to be the case in central Texas. In an act indicative of world-class cowardice and intolerance, someone has reacted to something they disagree with by resorting to sowing fear and intimidation. Classy.
Of course, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation only works if your intended targets take your threat seriously. In this case, the property owners made it clear they weren’t going to back down in the face of an anonymous threat. Even in Texas, the world is changing, and those who insist on clinging to the politics of racial identity will eventually be left behind to stew in their resentment and quashed sense of entitlement. White (no longer) Makes Right (no matter how much you might cling to a different and dying reality)…and karma can be a real bitch.
