Truth used to be absolute; now it’s whatever a demagogue needs it to be

There comes a point where a rational person needs to recognize that the truth ain’t what it used to be. Not that politicians haven’t stretched, folded, spindled, and/or manipulated the truth for their own selfish ends since the dawn of time. What’s new and decidedly more evil and malicious is that truth has been commoditized. It’s been turned into just another means of justifying whatever philosophy or action a this President deems appropriate.

The “diversity lottery program?” In the fertile imagination of a President ready, willing, and able to spread propaganda as thick as necessary in order to carry the day, it’s responsible for the terrorist attack in lower Manhattan. The program was slated to be eliminated as part of broader reforms in 2013.

Those reforms were part of an immigration bill which passed the Senate but died in the GOP-dominated House. Then again, why would this President let the truth get in the way of a perfectly good opportunity to flog Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)?

If the President is looking for a scapegoat- his M.O. in cases like this- he’d be well-advised to look at members of his own party in Congress.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) was quick to defend Schumer, tweeting that if the immigration bill had passed in 2013, it would have ended the visa lottery program and increased merit-based visas.

As horrific as the terrorist attack in lower Manhattan was, there’s no credible way to tie it to an immigration program…particularly one which Congressional Republicans failed to eliminate. If anything, an increase in terrorist attacks on American soil could eventually be laid at the feet of this President. After all, his “budget blueprint” proposes to cut half a billion dollars from “critical counterterrorism programs” administered by the Department of Homeland Security.

You won’t hear that truth, though…because it’s inconvenient.

As tempting as it may be to politicize terrorism, common sense would seem to dictate that if the goal is to protect American lives, taking politics out of the equation is the only way to ensure everyone’s pulling in the same direction. That would be the mature, adult thing to do…but maturity hasn’t been a hallmark of this President. Nor has it been the driving force behind counterterrorism efforts.

Why would you spend money on preventing terrorism when blaming Democrats is SO much cheaper and easier?

Nice work, America.
