True Patriotism has nothing to do with cheap symbols like flags, pledges, or songs

I could wax philosophic about what patriotism is and isn’t, but I ran across this video which does the heavy lifting for me. If more Americans would watch it (c’mon…it’s only 4:19), I believe we’d be well on our way to finding and living true patriotism- you know; the kind where we lift each other up instead of tearing each other down?

Real patriotism- true and sincere love of country- isn’t about flags or pledges or songs. It’s not about standing or kneeling. It’s not about singing or placing your right hand over your heart. Those are merely symbols some use to highlight their own self-ascribed patriotic fervor…or denigrate others for their perceived lack of patriotism. America isn’t about “us” vs. “them.” It’s not about racism and bigotry. It’s about all of us pulling together…except that some seem willing to hold themselves up as “more American.” If you have to scream about how much you love America, you’re not a patriot.

Well it seems to me that the group of folks that have demonized our American government, attacked our voting rights and continue to discriminate against Americans could also be considered not patriotic. Of course they have flag pins on their lapels and call themselves republicans however I was always taught actions speak louder than words.
