“I wonder how many people…are regular viewers of porn? That’s a dark, dark secret, isn’t it?

You ain’t a REAL Christian until “Coach” Dave Daubenmire SAYS you’re a Christian!!

Pornography is destroying this land. It’s destroying families. It’s destroying careers. It’s destroying- Oh, my goodness- our young people. I remember when their used to be standards in our movies…and now the stuff that comes across our movie screens is just unbelievable; it’s insidious…. Folks, we’ve GOT to ban pornography…. Many people are finding their lives RUINED by an addiction they’ve got to pornography. We want to stop smoking, we want to stop drug use, we want to stop all types of bullying. Pornography is the greatest scourge in America, and I say it’s time for us as a God-fearing, decent people to once again ban pornography.

Les Jenkins, who happens to be one of my long-time regular readers, has his own blog, on which he’ll tackle some interesting issues now and again. In this case it’s pornography and his fascination over why “Coach” Dave Daubenmire seems so vehemently opposed to it.

A little background may be in order, as my gentle reader may not be familiar with the Jesus-centric stylings of “Coach” Daubenmire. A former high school football coach, Daubenmire ran into a spot of bother in the late ’90s for forcing his players to pray.

He was sued by ACLU, though according to himself “the ACLU relented and offered Coach an out of court settlement. God honored his stand and the ACLU backed off,” which sort of fails to mention the fact that the court ordered Daubenmire to stop leading religious activities at school and that the school board paid an $ 18,000 settlement. But Daubenmire is a traditional Liar-for-Jesus, so you wouldn’t expect much honesty from that source. “As a result of the experience, Coach heard the call to move out of coaching a high school team, to the job of coaching God’s team,” is not entirely accurate either.

As often happens with the American Taliban, Daubenmire managed to cobble together a career built on proclaiming how his 1st Amendment rights were violated by the Constitution. (Consider the irony of that- Daubenmire’s Constitutional rights are being violated by the Constitution.) Evidently, he was well within his divinely ordained Constitutional rights when he forced his players to pray. His players’ right are evidently subordinate to his own.

His ministry, which he (please try to refrain from chuckling) call Pass the Salt,

[I]s perhaps most famous for hosting the right wing conference “A gathering of Eagles”, promoted as a “NON-POLITICAL event […] designed to educate Christians about the great moral issues facing this country [,…] such as The Gay Agenda, Abortion, Individual Liberty, Hate Crime Legislation, and the religion of Secular Humanism,” which does not sound distinctly non-political but there you go. Guests included several famous non-partisan Christians such as Flip Benham, Rick Scarborough, and Peter Labarbera.

Daubenmire is a man of God in the same way Jim Jones was a connoisseur of KoolAid.

In a video entitled “Let’s Criminalize Pornography,” Daubenmire rails against what he perceives as the insidious evil of pornography. In the video, he makes a number of (unsupported with anything resembling evidence) claims which he views to be self-evident and beyond reproach. Facts may be hard to come by in Daubenmire’s argument, but he KNOWS in his heart of hearts that “pornography is the greatest scourge in America.” As such, it MUST be banned in order to save our souls and the souls of our children for Jesus Christ.

When consider his “argument,” I’d caution my reader to take into account Daubenmire’s firm belief that ONLY Evangelical Christians are qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. I suspect he slept through the junior high schools Civics class which covered the separation of Church and State…because in his mind, the State SHOULD BE the Church. HIS God should absolutely be our government…because his beliefs are The One, Truly, and ONLY Faith ©,

If you’re wondering about the apparent absence of things like Christian love, tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion in Daubenmire’s theology, you’re not alone. His “Kill ’em and grill ’em” Christianity is surprisingly devoid of compassion and kindness. The “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” aspect of Christianity appears to be something Daubenmire feels no need to be confined by. As a representative of The One, True, and ONLY Faith ©, he has it on Divine authority that things like compassion and kindness are for losers and Liberals.

Turn the other cheek? How is that anything but a sign of weakness??

And don’t even get him started on Muslims or the LGBTQ community….

Ah, but I digress….

Because pornography spontaneously appears on his computer when all he’s trying to do is glorify God, Daubenmire KNOWS how insidious it can be. Never mind that most pop-ups appears because of sites you’ve previously visited; purveyors of pornography MUST. BE. STOPPED. IN. THE. NAME. OF. GOD. And by any means necessary.

Left unchecked exposure to pornography inevitably leads to addiction, which leads to…GASP!!!…masturbation, the E-ticket to Hell.

Never mind that, as he says, it’s a matter of supply and demand. As long as human beings draw breath, they’ll have sex. If they can’t have sex, they’ll want something to remind them of sex. If they’re reminded of sex, and appropriately excited, they may give into temptation and spank the monkey. To Daubenmire’s way of thinking, yanking one’s own chain is just this side of mass murder.

It’s hard to glorify God when you’re spilling your seed, knowhutimean??

I found the comments on Les’ post to be interesting, in that he seemed to light up the hot buttons of one commenter who seems impervious to reason or rationality. The comments range from the reasonable and well considered,

I understand that talking about sex can be awkward, especially when people maybe have some looks/confidence/body issues that are embarrassing to them….but damn, I have never understood why so many people, all the world over, are so backwards and fearful when it comes to discussing sex or having reasonable attitudes towards it.

It’s especially silly when one looks at the reality. Almost everyone has sexual fantasies and masturbates, except maybe those unlucky few who were mentally tortured into permanent, fearful chastity. Around the world, there must be several million people masturbating at any given time…so, why hasn’t this sinful world just fallen apart? And what is a sexual fantasy but individualized, homemade porn?

I’d be willing to bet just about anything that sexual repression and irrational beliefs about sexuality have caused more personal and social problems, more grief and violence, than all the “sinful” fornication, masturbation, porn-watching, and lust put together.

to the borderline irrational:

Right. And you have never considered that the porn industry viciously abuses women. Those young women all dreamed of doing all those things just for strangers like you, huh? None of them are horribly poor, none have been sold into slavery and none are beat up and drugged into addiction and controlled that way, right? And I’m sure you wife just loves that you announced your porn problem to the world. Know what? you know nothing about women at all.

And you also know nothing about the true destruction that porn actually does to both men as individuals and to relationships they are in. While that coach (I don’t know who he is) didn’t state the reasons for the harm, it is a well studied area in psychology. It is well documented that porn addiction can be just as bad or worse than heroin addiction. It can ruin ‘normal’ sex for men, leading to problems in their real sex lives with their wives- leading to divorce, etc. It can also lead to affairs due to the lack of satisfaction with ‘normal’ sex. Again, result: divorce. Kids get hurt with divorce. Result: messed up kids. Result: messed up society. You get the picture. While all that is a simplistic explanation, this is just a comment on a blog. Look it up- there’s a lot of research. So, before you blather on about porn not having any negative effects on men or on society, why don’t you do even the smallest amount of research?

I’m sorry for your wife. Go on pretending to be such a sophisticate. But what you really are is a creep. A creep that hates God.

Yes, I realize addiction to pornography is a real thing. For some folks it can and does pose a real problem. Then again, so does alcohol, gambling, and cosplay. The fact is that pornography is a 1st Amendment issue. You may not like it, but you don’t have the right to ban consumption of pornography across the board. You religious faith, intolerance, or fear of sexuality doesn’t provide you license to prevent other adults from doing what adults often do.

The porn industry does in some cases abuse women. That’s an intolerable state of affairs which should be addressed by law enforcement, but it’s a 1st Amendment issue. Speech and expression cannot be banned simply because some find it to be “bad,” “nasty,” “awful,” or “sinful.”

As with anything else in life, there’s ideally a balance which should be pursued and attained. That some are unable to find such balance doesn’t mean pornography must be banned.

Sex is a basic and normal part of the human experience. We’re all walking this Earth because our parents had sex at least once. The biggest problem is so many have been conditioned to view sex as dirty and nasty and as such to be avoided at all costs.

A friend once told me that if you believe sex to be nasty and sinful you’re doing it wrong…and I think she was spot on.

American Taliban devotees who think like Dave Daubenmire believe their faith allows them to tell others what they can or cannot do behind closed doors. What happens between consenting adults or between an individual and his keyboard is the business and concern of no one else save for those directly involved. You’re certainly free to your opinion…but not to use said opinion to justify denying another human being their 1st Amendment rights. Or the satisfaction of expressing their sexuality.

If porn “spontaneously” pops up on your computer, you have choices available to you. Close the pop-up window and carry on, follow the link and find what satisfaction you will, or close your laptop and walk away.

Live and let live. Take care of your own business. Make certain your own house is in order.

That’s where it should end.
