It’s time to face the reality that the President is mentally unstable. What next?

Having just passed the artificial it’s-gotta-mean-something-to-somebody 100-day mark of the Trump presidency, at least one thing should be abundantly clear: Tribe’s given voice to what should be considerable concern about a very clear and present danger. Donald Trump, besides being unfit and unqualified to be President, may quite possibly be mentally ill. The ignorance and delusions of grandeur are bad enough. The fourth-grade syntax and child-like wordplay are distressing. What’s truly frightening is the realization those things pale in the face of his contempt for democracy and commitment to authoritarianism.

Donald Trump appears to seriously believe his power and authority should be absolute and unquestioned…and he’s surrounded himself with “yes men” who feed his delusion. I’ve written previously about Trump being the modern-day equivalent of Benito Mussolini. That may be closer to the truth than even I’d realized.

What will it take before the country- including even some of Trump’s supporters- recognize the President to be sufficiently mentally unstable as to pose a legitimate threat, perhaps even to this country’s continued survival? I realize that sounds alarmist, but can we really afford a President who appears committed primarily to dismantling processes crucial to the maintenance of representative democracy?

Or are those who voted for Donald Trump so thoroughly addled, so detached from reality, that they’d give him the benefit of the doubt? Is his open and unabashed admiration for strongmen like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un really of no consequence to America’s Lowest Common Denominator ©? Are they satisfied with the panem et circenses sensibility of the Trump Administration?

Americans put him in office…and it may well come down to Americans removing him from office. Even if (and/or when) we’re able to do that, how long will it take to undo the damage already done? Once/if America finally wakes up to what’s being done in their name, will it be too late to put things right? Despite whatever the consequences may turn out to be, this President should be removed from office forthwith…because he’s certainly not about to do the right thing and resign.

Given Trump’s strong popularity among his supporters, the only conclusion I can come to is that a staggeringly large portion of this country also may quite possibly be mentally ill. This is truly frightening.
