How Democracy Dies: Taxpayer-sponsored rallies to spread propaganda

Surely I’m not the only who thinks “Nuremberg rallies” when the subject of Donald Trump’s “campaign” rallies is broached? What is the President trying to accomplish? Is he already campaigning for 2020? Is he trying to keep the righteous fervor of the masses at a fever pitch in case he needs to sic them on the press, Liberals, or other bogeymen whom he’s determined to be an enemy?

Call me naive, but I fail to see the purpose behind holding campaign-style rallies…that the American taxpayer is footing the bill for. For a President who promised to restore fiscal responsibility to Washington, perhaps this is merely the latest iteration of “do as I say, not as I do?” It appears rules are what lesser mortals should be expected to follow; they simply don’t apply to some awash in greatness as this President believes himself to be.

Cue the Leni Riefenstahl-style “Triumph of the Will” sequel in 4…3…2….

Censorship? Not hardly…but neither do I expect taxpayers should be required to pay for campaign rallies. The President is free to get his re-election campaign fired up whenever he chooses. What he’s NOT free to do is to expect taxpayers to pay the freight.
